Developer Summit, d2, d3 More Updates!

I was catching up on reading the feed this evening and I see there a re a few more updates from d2 and d3 of the Developer Summit. As it has come to an end, everyone is slowing making their way back home.

Dave is back home and has a post wrapping up the Developer Summit: http://blog.davebouwman.net/2007/03/23/DevSummitWrapupNETSIGPresentation.aspx. Dave sounds like he really enjoyed the Developer Summit. I have to agree with Dave, it really is the event of the year for ESRI Developers. He also talks about some things that could be improved and has now posted the presentation he gave at the .NET SIG.

I was just having a read through this and it looks like it would have been a good talk to be in. It’s quite interesting hearing about the Agile development phase and some of the things he mentions in the presentation. We follow RUP (Rational Unified Process) quite strictly and have been now for a few years. It’s been an unbelievable success in a number of the big ArcGIS Server implementations that we have completed. As part of this process we have been making extensive use of UML to help. You can download Dave’s presentation here: http://blog.davebouwman.net/ct.ashx?id=fd4112ec-aa50-481e-8fd6-96006f7941a1&url=http%3a%2f%2fwww.davebouwman.net%2fsourcecode%2fDevSummit-Becomming-Agile-Final.zip. Well done Dave J

Very Spatial was out one last time and spoke to some of the ESRI Support Team. You can have a listen here: http://media.libsyn.com/media/avsp/AVSP_EDS07-SupportCenter.mp3.

The last thing I found myself reading for the night was Matt Priour’s writeup’s. He has done some great writeup’s about the sessions he attended. Thanks for this Matt, I was really wondering what some of the .NET sessions were like and it seems that you attended some of the ones I would of gone to.

Some of the sessions he has writeup’s for are:

Leveraging ArcWeb Services in GIS

Building AJAX Based Web Applications With ArcGIS Server And .NET.

A very honest writeup about this session. I like that. I notice Matt mentions the use of XML and JSON. We have implemented the use of JSON within our framework. We have been using this for a while now in quite a few projects. It’s working very well that we have decided to keep using it!

Deploying And Tuning ArcGIS Server

Leveraging Geoprocessing Framework In ArcGIS Engine

Programming Custom Tasks For ArcGIS Explorer

.NET SIG.

Some interesting things to hear from here. I read that James raised the issue of ADF and it being placed on another machine. I know this topic is a highly debated topic and people don’t like it as well but I can’t really comment on this one. Like the paraphrase that Matt posted: “that is the business model for today”.

Building And Deploying Enterprise Solutions With ArcGIS Server

Interesting to hear Matt’s comments on this. “Not a lot of good tech meat here”. I though this session would have been better!

Developing Custom Web Tasks Using The .NET ADF

ArcGIS Mobile SDK

Wow, Matt wrote up about quite a few sessions. Great to see! You can find these sessions writeup’s on his postings here: http://priour.wordpress.com/2007/03/22/thoughts-on-dev-summit/ and here: http://priour.wordpress.com/2007/03/22/dev-summit-continues/.

Well I think that kind of wraps up most of what I wanted to know happened at the Developer Summit. I really wanted to be there as well but I guess I just couldn’t. There is always next year and even though I don’t know where I will or what I will be doing, I going to try and be there. Who knows, I might even attend the UC, although this is kind of died off as a technical event.

Thanks for the nice comments RE: my blog postings on the Dev Summit. I enjoyed attending it and was way overdue for some new content on my blog anyway.
